State College, PA – On December 4, 2024, the Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub in downtown State College hosted the inaugural Central PA Sensor Technology Cluster event, gathering industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and economic development experts to showcase the region’s growing sensor technology industry. The event, organized by Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern PA, Chamber of Business & Industry of Centre County (CBICC), SEDA-Council of Governments (SEDA-COG), and Penn State’s Office of Entrepreneurship and Commercialization, served as a rallying call to position Central PA as the “Sensor Valley” of the United States.
A Sensor Technology Cluster comprises companies that create products and technologies converting natural elements into electrical representations and those optimizing, processing, and transferring those signals. Todd Dolbin, Vice President of the Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County shared, “This event not only highlights the progress our organizations are making but reinforces the message that we are collaboratively working towards strategic goals, starting with real evidence of sensor cluster activity.”
“We’ve seen growth in the sensor cluster for many years now,” added Noelle Long, Director of Export Development with SEDA-COG. “Now that this sector is being recognized, I’m looking forward to bringing more tailored training, subsidies, and increased exposure to this critical sector and to the region. Regionalism is key in bringing initiatives to fruition and I’m thrilled to be working alongside such great partners as Ben Franklin and the CBICC.”
Data analytics provided by Maya Nagiub, reflected the historic employment trends of Centre, Mifflin, and Blair counties and their changes over the years. Nagiub’s research showed while the hospitality industry steadied and healthcare companies increased, the private industry has changed with the departure of manufacturing companies like Corning and MuRata. With over 30 thriving companies, including KCF Technologies, Phillips Ultrasounds, and Amphenol Advanced Sensors located in Central Pennsylvania, the region is actively building a strong foundation for the next wave of economic growth and opportunity. “We are dedicated to doing the strategic work and community investment needed to advance Central PA’s economy,” said Stephen Brawley, CEO of Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern PA. “The resources are here, the brilliant minds are here, and the partnerships are here in Sensor Valley.”
A key initiative of the Sensor Technology Cluster is to create 200 high-paying jobs in the region within five years by launching and supporting 15 startups. The economic ripple effect will bring population growth, increased community vibrancy, and opportunities for surrounding towns.BFTP, SEDA-COG, and the CBICC recently submitted an application for funding through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration under its Build to Scale program. The application seeks funds to invest in Sensor Valley through Project SUCCEED (Sensors, Ultrasound, and Chromatography for Collaborative Economic Expansion and Development).
The event’s momentum was spearheaded by speaker and co-organizer Todd Erdley, Director of the Central Region at Ben Franklin Technology Partners. The room buzzed with excitement during the Q&A session, as attendees discussed ideas, pledged support, and outlined next steps to bring the vision of Sensor Valley to life.
