STATE COLLEGE, PA – Navigating college life as a student just got easier with the launch of Beemia, an app and website made for students by recent and soon-to-be Penn State graduates. Founded by Andrew Strause (’17), Beemia is a free information marketplace that brings college students, businesses, and communities together.

By the time Andrew was a senior at Penn State, he had learned so much about college life (the hard way) and was eager to share his advice with younger students. “I was living with 11 roommates, and we paid $72,000 to live in a house on West College Avenue. We definitely had the time of our lives, but looking back, we probably (more like definitely) did not need to pay for 2 years’ worth of out-of-state tuition.” – Andrew Strause, Founder & CEO

In 2017, Andrew set out to create an apartment service for Penn State students. One year later, he left his nine-to-five job to work full-time creating a one-stop-shop where students could find apartments, events and band information. Soon enough, the company grew to a team of six passionate individuals who all experienced the pain points of college and were eager to offer their expertise to build an app that could change what it’s like to be a student on the hunt to find information and ultimately a place of belonging at college. This combination of resources became the driving force behind Beemia.

The name Beemia is derived from the concept of a beehive, where bees only thrive if they work together. Beemia believes in the power of all community members – college students and businesses alike – working together to grow and thrive.

After downloading the app (available to both iOS and Android users), students at Penn State automatically “Join the Hive.” They are immediately exposed to information divided into three main services: Housing, Lifestyle, and Buzz. Users can find apartments and list sublets (Housing), discover information on bars, bands and events (Lifestyle), and read through content that is rooted in college storytelling (Buzz).

“As the youngest in the family, I had a fantastic support system throughout college. But many students don’t have such strong guiding lights. Beemia is here to make sure everyone has the same opportunity for guidance and advice. We’re the older sibling, the knowledgeable friend, or the experienced mentor for every college student, knowing and sharing the ins and outs of college life.” – Andrew Strause, Founder & CEO
