The PA Wilds BIG IDEA Contest Impact Report showcases the power of innovation in rural communities. From 2022–2024, Ben Franklin Technology Partners and regional partners awarded over $150,000 to emerging entrepreneurs through pitch contests, educational programming, and hands-on support. This report highlights their stories, outcomes, and the lasting impact on the PA Wilds region.

Igniting Innovation in the PA Wilds

The BIG IDEA Contests were the centerpiece of a wider $3 million, three-year initiative called “Igniting Innovation in the PA Wilds” funded by the partners and the Appalachian Regional Commission. The purpose of the initiative was to help make the 13 counties of the PA Wilds a competitive region for technology-based entrepreneurship and innovation-fueled growth for existing manufacturers through:

Robin and Tim Emerick, Jr. live in Renovo, a rural town located in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds, and offer a unique way to relive memories through their business, Otzzy.

ROAMBLER

Katie Caputo turned her childhood dream of connecting people with the outdoors into ROAMbler, a platform that matches Pennsylvania guides with explorers.

“Really, this contest series was about demystifying the process of attracting investment and scaling a good idea. The Partners wanted to change the mindset that ‘technology’ is purely computers and information-sharing software, and elevate that it can be a broader innovation in a particular field. ”
